First CP JINR meeting in new seven-year period: Vietnam’s Participation

In Dubna, Russia, on March 22, 2024, Vietnam’s Plenipotentiary Representative to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Professor Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, who also serves as the Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), led a delegation from Vietnam to participate in the session of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the Governments of the JINR Member States (CP JINR). The Vietnamese delegation included notable figures such as Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Hoang Duong, Deputy Head of the International Cooperation Department at VAST, Master Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Head of the Science and Technology Department at the Vietnam Embassy in Russia, and Master Nguyen Manh Hien, a staff member of the Science and Technology Department at the Vietnam Embassy in Russia.

This significant plenary meeting marked the commencement of the JINR’s ambitious 7-year plan spanning from 2024 to 2030. The plan aims at bolstering nuclear research capabilities, expanding interdisciplinary studies, and fostering international collaboration. Vietnam, a longstanding member of JINR since 1956, has consistently contributed to fundamental scientific advancements through its involvement with JINR.

During the meeting, the committee members attentively considered and endorsed the summaries and proposals stemming from the JINR working group meeting held in Hanoi in January 2024. At this gathering, Vietnam advocated for adjustments in contribution calculation methods and levels, alongside advocating for intensified research and training cooperation through deeper engagement with JINR.

Under the guidance of the government and VAST’s supervision, Vietnam has witnessed a notable surge in both the quantity and quality of its research personnel participating in activities at Dubna in recent years. Researchers from Vietnamese universities and research institutes have actively engaged with Dubna’s specialized research facilities, producing a plethora of scientific publications in internationally recognized journals. Moreover, Vietnam has initiated involvement in key projects addressing significant global scientific challenges conducted at JINR, such as the NICA project, aimed at constructing a cutting-edge accelerator facility for high-intensity heavy ion collisions. In 2024 alone, over 20 new researchers are anticipated to join research endeavors at Dubna.

As part of the delegation’s agenda, Vice President Tran Tuan Anh conducted two working sessions with Deputy Director General Boris Sharkov of JINR. The sessions were aimed at fostering research and training collaboration programs for 2024, discussing proposals for establishing JINR information centers and shared laboratories in Vietnam, and providing encouragement and support to Vietnamese researchers, research students, and students based in Dubna.
